What is Scleroderma and Raynaud’s?

Scleroderma is a rare, complex auto-immune condition, affecting roughly 19,000 people in the UK. Raynaud’s phenomenon is a common circulatory disorder affecting roughly 1 in 10 people in the UK. Raynaud’s is one of the most common symptoms associated with scleroderma.

Scleroderma

Scleroderma is a rare orphan disease of the immune system, blood vessels and connective tissue. 2.5 million people worldwide have scleroderma, with 19,000 people diagnosed in the UK.

Due to fibrosis process, collagen deposits form under the skin and on the small blood vessels.

The condition is complex and involvement of organs such as the heart, lungs and gastrointestinal system is common. In addition, quality of life is significantly affected for people with this condition due to the painful and often debilitating symptoms.

Scleroderma has been likened to ‘having your body turn to stone’.

More than half of patients diagnosed with diffuse systemic sclerosis (SSc) will die or develop significant heart lung or kidney problems within three years.

Scleroderma patients are more than four times more likely to die than average for their age and sex. (Nihtyanova et al)

Despite currently licensed treatments scleroderma associated pulmonary hypertension is associated with a 5 year survival of under 50%.

Patients with early diffuse cutaneous disease have very high levels of disability. (Information courtesy of sruk.co.uk)

Raynaud’s

The small blood vessels in hands and feet are extremely sensitive to changes in temperature.

This means people with Raynaud’s Phenomenon will experience colour changes in their hands, as well as numbness and pain.

Raynaud’s is very common in the UK, with 10 million people affected, however a small percentage of people with Raynaud’s Phenomenon could go on to develop scleroderma.

97% of people with scleroderma were first diagnosed with Raynaud’s Phenomenon.
