Rainbows services
We’ve been providing the highest level of professional holistic care and emotional support to babies, children, young people and their families since 1994. Our incredible team helps to relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, and support their families to make the most of every precious moment, during life, through bereavement and beyond.
Our aim is to support every one of the thousands of babies, children and young people in the East Midlands, with a terminal or serious illness. To do this we’ve made it easier to access our services – wherever families are in our region. So, as well as providing end-of-life, short break care and bereavement support at our hospice, we also offer care and support at the point of need. Whether at our Lark Rise hospice, in the community, in hospital, or at home.

Hospice
Our Lark Rise hospice in Loughborough, is the only children’s hospice in the East Midlands, so it’s vital we keep our doors open.
At our hospice we provide specialist end-of-life, palliative and short break care to babies, children and young people with conditions for which there is no cure. Since 1994 we have opened our doors and hearts to those babies, children and young people as well as the people who love them most.
The state-of-the-art facilities at Lark Rise allow babies, children and young people with palliative symptoms and physical difficulties to have opportunities that we take for granted; from socialising, taking a bath, being in a hydro-therapy pool, or playing on the swings. We’re a lifeline for families, providing care, support and short breaks 24/7, 365 days a year.
We’re here to care for babies, children and young people through every stage of their illness to the end, and we support families after.
Serious illness affects the whole family. Many siblings miss out on activities or attention simply because caring for their brother or sister is so demanding. We’re here to offer support and practical help from music therapy to family activities and trips. Rainbows is a safe place where the whole family can be together, focusing on play, relaxation, and creating positive memories.
Hospital
We’re making sure more people who need us can access our care. That’s why we’re placing Rainbows specialist paediatric and palliative care nurses in hospitals in our region.
Rainbows nurses are based in hospitals across the East Midlands. They are there to provide support for families from the moment their baby or child is diagnosed with a life-limiting condition that will shorten their life, or a life-threatening condition that may progress to a terminal illness.
“At Rainbows we were able to be a family again. All three of us slept in the same room and that was amazing, it was so nice to be together. It was so nice to not have to be doing everything as well. Our dinners were cooked for us and we could eat together in the Dining Room”.
- From Willow’s Mum
Our nurses help families through one of the most challenging times of their lives, making sure families are aware of the options available to them, and supporting them at every step, whether they continue their care in hospital or move to our hospice.
A Rainbows nurse can be a shoulder to cry on and help to provide answers when a baby, child or young person dies suddenly or unexpectedly. Our team are available when the worst happens, and offer support when parents need it most.
Our nurses also provide training and support for hospital staff to increase knowledge and skills around palliative care for babies, children and young people aged 0-18.
Home
We make it possible for families to manage their child’s care their way. From pain management and play therapy to emotional support, our care can come to them at home.
We’re here to help families find a way through the stress and emotions of caring for a baby, child or young person who has a life-limiting condition for which there is no cure, or a life-threatening condition like cancer, which could mean they won’t live as long as you or I.
“Rainbows has also been really beneficial for my other daughters as they take part in activities at the hospice and they know there are people around them who care and understand”.
- From Zoe’s story

Our Values
One Team
We are more than a hospice. We are a team that helps families and communities to thrive. Although we do this in different ways and through different roles, everyone’s contribution to the Rainbows Experience is valuable and celebrated.
Working together: we actively seek diverse perspectives, working collaboratively to do our best, for ourselves, the people we support, our supporters and our organisation.
Working respectfully: we respect the opinions and expertise of others, taking opportunities to provide and accept feedback and alternative points of view.
Working fairly: we make sure that we value the part that everyone plays in our success, celebrating our individual and collective strengths and working to improve when we fall short.
People Centred
People are at the heart of what we do. We exist to support families experiencing one of the toughest challenges that life has to offer. We must be resilient, kind and compassionate, remembering that we are not alone.
Champion clarity: we ensure clarity and consistency in the way we communicate, being transparent and honest, even when we do not have all the answers.
Champion inclusivity: we create a warm and welcoming environment for everyone, listening, without judgement, to the experience of others, offering a safe space to talk.
Champion well-being: we show support, compassion and empathy in everything that we do, because, it is through taking care of ourselves that we can best care for others.
Aim High
We are a diverse team made up of experts from many fields. We use this diversity and knowledge to strive for excellence in everything that we do; from the experience we provide to the communities that we support to the way we run our charity.
Always adapting: we make sure to adapt to the needs of our babies, children, young people and families, the latest sector research and operational best practice.
Always sharing: we frequently share knowledge and data across our teams and sector, ensuring that we can be proactive and responsive, addressing challenges and continually increasing our impact.
Always learning: we never accept that we know it all, demonstrating curiosity and ambition towards individual and collective learning and growth.
Own It
We make a big impact for our community and beyond. Everyday we ensure a consistent, quality experience for each other and those that we support. To achieve this, we align expectations with reality and respond appropriately to different situations.
Be accountable: we do not act without reason, owning our actions and decisions, and holding others to account where required and appropriate.
Be focused: we think about the impact of our individual, team and organisational actions, ensuring that we prioritise the things that will make us better, even if that means doing fewer things, but doing them really well.
Be committed: we are proud of the difference that we make, as individuals and as a charity, striving to be the best we can be for ourselves, each other and those we support.
