Words from our Tor-Na-Dee Home Manager

Here’s what our Home Manager, Maureen Barrett, has to say about her decision to join Care UK with over 10 years at Care UK:

“I qualified as a general nurse in 1982 and then worked in hospitals throughout the UK before moving into residential care. I became a care home manager in 2000 and worked at several homes in the Aberdeen area, before arriving at Tor-Na-Dee as a brand new home in 2008.

“I'm a very positive, driven person and always aim to do the best I can for residents and the home. I love to see that residents are well looked after and that they feel happy and contented. And it's reassuring to know that residents' families are really pleased with the care that we provide. It's also rewarding to watch team members develop and blossom.

“I'm proud of how Tor-Na-Dee has progressed since it opened and the high standard of care that our knowledgeable team provides every single day. We do lots of surveys among residents, families and the people that work here, to gather feedback and suggestions, and we have monthly meetings with residents and relatives. I also hold a monthly manager's surgery but my door is always open to anyone who'd like to talk.”

Jancy Shaju

Deputy Manager

“I’m an experienced nurse, and I joined Care UK in 2012. Having worked my way up the ranks, I know how important it is to share knowledge and information with the team, and the need to be open and honest. Everyone has great ideas and should be listened to, so that’s what I always aim to do. I love working with residents and making them laugh. Every person we care for is special and I’m proud to be helping them to enjoy a great quality of life. Every day is busy and brings different challenges, but we work well as a team at Tor-Na-Dee, and it’s a happy care home. It’s a great place to work – I enjoy my job and helping the team to deliver great care to residents and their families.”

Anjali Thakur

Lifestyle Coordinator

“Before joining Care UK, I completed my master’s degree in computing and worked in several different roles related to computers and IT. I joined Tor-Na-Dee in August 2023 after working in a role where I organised events, activities and festivals. I was interested in the Lifestyle Coordinator role because it allowed me to organise activities for residents. The most important part of my role is understanding the needs of residents. Each person has unique requirements, preferences and limitations, and although it can be challenging, I love being creative and arranging fun, engaging and safe activities that are suitable for everyone. I enjoy creating moments of celebration and connection with residents. Knowing that my work directly impacts their lives makes me feel fulfilled in my role.”

Fiona Orvis

Lifestyle Coordinator

“I graduated from university with a degree in Pharmacy. I worked as a Pharmcist then I went to live abroad for 10 yearrs where I looked after my family. I decided to work for Care UK because I heard it was a great place to work, I was told that the poeple who work there are very friendly and helpful. The home is run to a very high standard. To be good in my role you need to be caring, have a happy personality, have empathy for the residents. good communication and patience. My favourite part of the day is when we are doing an activity and everyone is having a great time. This makes me feel happy. My intrestes outside of work are being with family. I love walking and going to the cinema. To unwind I go and see my friends.”

Christine Gordon

Lifestyle Coordinator

“Having previously worked as a Carer since 2017 with Care UK, taking up the role as a Lifestyle Coordinator at Tor-Na-Dee was a natural transition for me. I like being in an environment where I can care and interact with the elderly. In this role it is important that I get to know and understand each resident’s needs and capabilities – only by doing so, I am able to create fun, engaging and safe activities for everyone. It is so fulfilling to see the smiles on residents’ faces, especially when they truly enjoy the activities, be it singing or dancing!”

Jay Ralalage

Head Chef

“I’ve worked for Care UK since 2011 – getting this role was definitely a career highlight as I hadn’t been a head chef before. Doing this role has been great for helping me to develop my leadership skills. I’ve also learnt about care home catering, which is a very specific part of the catering sector as you’re supporting people who have very in-depth nutritional and physical requirements. I love getting into the home first thing in the morning and planning the day ahead, making sure everything is in place. While you never know what each day will bring, it’s good to have a plan. I never tire of cooking for the residents and getting to know them. Everyone is different and has varied needs and tastes. My team knows each person’s individual preferences and requirements, and we cater for them.”

Supawadee French

Business Administrator

“I joined Tor-Na-Dee in 2018. I’ve had quite a varied background: I’ve worked in administration, customer service, sales and accountancy. I joined Care UK as a care assistant before becoming business administrator. Every day is different at Tor-Na-Dee. In this role it helps to be a multitasker. It’s also important to be able to keep up in what can be a very busy environment. Being positive, kind and caring is important. One of the best parts of my role is being able to chat to, and get to know, residents and relatives. I do a lot of showrounds, which I enjoy, and I relish showcasing our wonderful care home and team to visitors and prospective residents. Away from work, I like to keep active: going to the gym, playing tennis or running after work.”
