Are you looking for a new, exciting opportunity?
As a Consultant Psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Psychiatry based in East Kent, you will be responsible for delivering a high-quality clinical service and actively involved in the strategic development of the team and broader services.
The Kent and Medway Community Rehabilitation Service provides care for those residing in Kent and Medway and will specialise in working with people whose long-term complex needs cannot be met by a general adult mental health service.
Successful applicants will ideally have MRCPsych or equivalent and be on, or within six months of inclusion on, the Specialist Register. You will be fully registered with the GMC, and have Approved Clinician status and S12 approval under the Mental Health Act (or achieve this within 3 months of appointment).

Main duties of the job

  • As a clinical leader in the team in each locality the post-holder will be in overall charge of patients' care. They will delegate to other team members and seek to support the development of individual team members in the pursuit of excellent clinical care. The post-holder will have expert knowledge of options for the use of psychotropic medication and of the monitoring and treatment of physical illnesses including when to refer patients to their GPs or specialists. They will have good working knowledge of the use of MHA, MCA, safeguarding procedures and the Court of Protection.
  • The clinical leader will be accessible and supportive to team members.
  • As a senior member of the service, the post-holder will attend unit Business Meetings chaired by the team managers, and the Operational Meeting, chaired by the service lead. The post-holder will form effective working relationships with staff, team managers, service managers, the service lead, and the professional leads in the Rehabilitation Service.
  • The post-holder will be expected to contribute to service development, including quality assurance, innovation, learning from untoward incidents, near misses, compliments and complaints. This clinical governance and quality agenda appears at the Business and Operational Meetings. The post-holder will support the process of team 'debrief' and learning after untoward incidents and complaints.

Training, Qualifications and Registration

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • On the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
  • Approved Clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • MRCPsych
  • Additional clinical qualifications
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
Clinical Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
Desirable criteria
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
Academic Skills and Lifelong Learning

Essential criteria
  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
  • Ability to work in and lead team
  • Demonstrate commitment to shared leadership & collaborative working to deliver improvement
  • Participated in continuous professional development
  • Participated in research or service evaluation
  • Able to use and appraise clinical evidence
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes
Desirable criteria
  • Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
  • Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken
  • Experienced in clinical research and /or service evaluation
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications
