We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Mental Health Nurse role at HMP Lewes to join our team. HMP Lewes is a category B male prison. Lewes prison is based near the centre of the historical town of Lewes, which is just a 5 minute walk away.

Due to HMP Lewes holding remand prisoners, we do require staff to work on a rota basis and you can be
asked to work nights, bank holidays and weekends although if you are looking for flexibility we can discuss this at interview stage.

Salary

You'll receive an annual salary up to £52,507 per annum - depending on experience

Candidates are required to have a Legal right to work in the UK and due to the nature of the role, offers of employment will be subject to additional vetting and security checks

What you'll be doing

As a Senior Mental Health Nurse you will

  • Lead a multi-disciplinary team to deliver a nurse led service and prevent hospital admissions.
  • You will undertake medication rounds, dispense controlled medication
  • Attend emergency response situations
  • Assess patients, and undertake reception screening.
  • You will assess patient's health needs using an evidence based framework and be able to risk assess use sound clinical knowledge.
  • You will ensure that you a ssess physical and mental health of prisoners on admission to the prison and throughout their period of custody so that any appropriate referral can be made.
  • You will also be responsible for making a clinical judgement with regard to any immediate need and long term treatment.

Qualifications
  • Registered nurse - Mental Health
  • Current professional qualification (NMC)
  • Evidence of Continued Professional Development
  • Experience of the complexities of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working
  • A non-judgmental and compassionate approach
  • Understanding of mental health policy including clinical governance and the quality and outcomes framework, along with national standards such as NICE
  • Ability to assess and manage patient risk effectively.
Although not essential ideal applicants would have experience in a hospital, community or prison environment.
