The Importance Of Diversity, Inclusion, And Equality in Nursing
Subscribe
Few things are as crucial to nursing today as diversity, inclusion, and equality; Amira takes us through their importance and what strategies can be put in place to help these values truly flourish.
Diversity, inclusion, and equality are essential aspects of the nursing profession in the UK. The healthcare system is evolving rapidly, and it is vital that healthcare providers, including nurses, adapt to meet the needs of the diverse patient population.
The nursing profession is one of the most diverse professions, with a workforce comprising individuals from different ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds. The importance of diversity, inclusion, and equality in nursing cannot be overstated, as it has a significant impact on the quality of care provided to patients.
The Importance Of Diversity, Inclusion And Equality In Nursing
Diversity, inclusion, and equality are crucial in the nursing profession because they help to promote better patient outcomes. Nurses who come from diverse backgrounds bring with them unique perspectives and experiences that can contribute to better patient care.
A diverse nursing workforce can also help to address healthcare disparities that exist among different patient populations. Patients are more likely to receive culturally competent care when they are treated by healthcare providers who share their cultural background.
In addition, inclusion and equality are essential in nursing because they create a sense of belonging for all nurses. Nurses who feel included and valued are more likely to be satisfied with their work and are more likely to provide high-quality care. Furthermore, creating an inclusive work environment that values diversity and equality can help to attract and retain nurses from diverse backgrounds.
Challenges To Diversity, Inclusion And Equality in Nursing
Despite the importance of diversity, inclusion, and equality in nursing, there are several challenges that prevent the nursing profession from fully embracing these values. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of diversity in nursing leadership positions.
According to a report by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), only 7% of NHS nursing directors are from ethnic minority backgrounds, even though 20% of NHS nurses are from ethnic minority backgrounds. This lack of diversity in leadership positions can make it difficult to promote diversity and inclusion at all levels of the nursing profession.
Another challenge is the lack of cultural competency training for nurses. Many nurses receive minimal training on how to provide culturally competent care to patients from diverse backgrounds. This lack of training can lead to misunderstandings and miscommunications between nurses and patients, which can negatively impact patient care.
Furthermore, there is a significant gender pay gap in nursing, with male nurses earning more than female nurses. This gender pay gap can contribute to feelings of inequality and unfairness among female nurses, which can impact their job satisfaction and overall performance.
Inclusion and equality are essential in nursing because they create a sense of belonging for all nurses. Nurses who feel included and valued are more likely to be satisfied with their work and are more likely to provide high-quality care.
