Subscribe
Nursing plays a crucial role in the healthcare system, and nurses of all levels and specialisms are tasked with meeting the diverse needs and expectations of patients. By understanding these dynamics, nurses can provide high-quality care and promote positive patient experiences. This article explores the challenges and strategies involved in meeting patient expectations in the nursing context.
Nursing practice revolves around the core principle of delivering secure and individualised care. However, an increasing number of nurses are expressing their inability to meet the necessary level of care and support.
The concerns raised, such as working hours, inadequate staffing, personal health and well-being, and care standards, have been longstanding issues that persist.
Understanding Patient Expectations
Meeting patient expectations requires nurses to have a comprehensive understanding of what patient’s desire from their healthcare experience. Patients expect compassionate and empathetic care, timely and accurate information, effective communication, involvement in decision-making, and respect for their cultural and personal values. Nurses must be sensitive to these expectations to build trust and rapport with their patients.
Nurses' dedication and empathy in providing care have been particularly valued and acknowledged by patients, especially in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nurses, alongside numerous other individuals, displayed unwavering commitment in both NHS healthcare facilities and the private sector, taking the lead in delivering services throughout the nation. Their crucial role encompassed organizing and administering vaccination programs, pivotal in facilitating a gradual return to a semblance of normalcy in our lives.
Effective Communication And Patient-Centred Care
Effective communication is vital in nursing to address patient concerns, clarify information, and establish a positive therapeutic relationship. Nurses must actively listen to patients, encourage them to express their thoughts and feelings, and provide clear explanations about their care plan.
Adopting a patient-centred approach ensures that care is tailored to individual needs, preferences, and values. Nurses must consider patients' cultural backgrounds, values, and preferences to provide culturally sensitive and inclusive care.
Nurses strive to establish therapeutic relationships with patients based on trust, empathy, and effective communication. They actively involve patients in decision-making processes regarding their healthcare, respecting their autonomy and ensuring their active participation.
Nurses encourage patients to express their concerns, ask questions, and voice their opinions, fostering a collaborative and empowering healthcare environment.
